The Government of India has introduced the PM KUSUM Scheme (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyaan) to promote renewable energy in the agricultural sector. This initiative is a game-changer for farmers, providing them with clean, affordable, and sustainable energy solutions.
Launched under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the scheme aims to reduce farmers’ dependence on conventional electricity and diesel for irrigation. By encouraging solar energy adoption it also contributes to India’s ambitious renewable energy targets.
Key Objectives of PM KUSUM Scheme:
1. Promote the use of solar energy in agriculture.
2. Provide farmers with a reliable and cost-effective power supply.
3. Reduce dependence on fossil fuels and minimize carbon emissions.
4. Generate income opportunities for farmers through solar power generation.
Main Components of PM KUSUM Yojana:
1. Component A – Setting up of grid-connected renewable energy power plants (up to 2 MW).
2. Component B – Installation of standalone solar-powered pumps for irrigation.
3. Component C – Solarization of existing grid-connected agricultural pumps.
Benefits for Farmers:
1. Subsidy up to 60% on solar pump installation.
2. Reduced electricity and fuel costs, making farming more profitable.
3. Additional income from selling surplus solar power to DISCOMs.
4. Energy independence and uninterrupted irrigation supply.
Application Process:
Farmers can apply for the PM KUSUM Scheme through their respective state renewable energy departments or DISCOM portals. The process includes registration, verification, selection of vendors, installation, and subsidy disbursement.
Impact of PM KUSUM Yojana:
The scheme is designed to cover over 30 lakh farmers across India, with a strong focus on rural empowerment and sustainability. It is expected to add 25,750 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
The PM KUSUM Scheme not only benefits farmers financially but also accelerates India’s journey towards clean energy and environmental conservation. By bridging agriculture and renewable energy, it empowers rural India to lead the nation’s green revolution.
