India’s flagship residential rooftop solar initiative, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, has achieved a major milestone by surpassing 5 million (50.06 lakh) rooftop solar installations across the country. According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the programme has also helped commission a total 14.8 GW of rooftop solar capacity, reflecting the rapid adoption of clean energy by Indian households.
Launched just over two years ago, the scheme has witnessed remarkable growth compared to the previous decade, during which fewer than eight lakh rooftop solar systems were installed. Supported by a government outlay of ₹75,021 crore, the initiative aims to make rooftop solar affordable by providing financial assistance to eligible residential consumers.
The pace of installations has accelerated significantly in recent months. The scheme is now adding nearly one lakh households every six days, while daily installations have increased more than threefold over the past nine months. July 2026 recorded the highest monthly achievement so far, with more than 5 lakh new rooftop solar installations completed.
The scheme has also delivered direct financial benefits to consumers. The government has disbursed over ₹28,000 crore in subsidies through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. Nearly 19 lakh households are now enjoying zero electricity bills, while more than 12 lakh households earned additional income by selling surplus electricity back to the grid during FY 2024–25.
To expand access among economically weaker sections, the government has introduced the Utility Led Aggregation Model, enabling rooftop solar installations for PMAY, BPL, and SC/ST households. The programme has also strengthened India’s solar ecosystem by creating thousands of jobs, expanding the network of registered solar vendors, and training over 2.3 lakh professionals across the rooftop solar value chain.
With a fully digital application and subsidy process, the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana continues to play a key role in promoting clean energy adoption, reducing household electricity costs, and supporting India’s long-term renewable energy goals.
