GE Vernova T&D India Limited has emerged as the lowest bidder for a major transmission project being developed by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID). The project will support the evacuation of renewable power from Rajasthan and strengthen India’s high-capacity transmission infrastructure.
6,000 MW HVDC Transmission System
Under the project, GE Vernova T&D India will undertake the design, supply and establishment of a 6,000 MW, ±800 kV High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Line Commutated Converter terminal station.
The terminal station will consist of two units of 3,000 MW each, enabling large volumes of electricity to be transmitted efficiently over long distances.
Renewable Power Evacuation from Rajasthan
The transmission system will facilitate the evacuation of renewable energy from the Barmer II region in Rajasthan to South Kalamb. This infrastructure is expected to help integrate large-scale renewable generation into India’s electricity grid.
With renewable projects expanding rapidly in Rajasthan, high-capacity transmission systems such as HVDC are becoming increasingly important for moving clean electricity to major consumption centres.
Long-Term Infrastructure Project
The project covers the complete scope from design and equipment supply to the establishment of the HVDC terminal station. Its implementation will take place over multiple years, reflecting the scale and technical complexity of the project.
The project is being developed in India and forms part of the country’s broader efforts to strengthen its transmission network and improve connectivity for renewable energy.
GE Vernova’s Position in India’s Transmission Sector
The project further strengthens GE Vernova T&D India’s presence in India’s high-capacity transmission market and highlights the growing demand for advanced grid infrastructure to support the country’s renewable-energy expansion.
The company has also stated that the transaction is being undertaken on an arm’s-length basis and does not qualify as a related-party transaction.
