Hindustan Zinc Raises Renewable Power Share to 22%, Targets 70% by FY28

Hindustan Zinc Limited has increased the share of renewable energy in its overall electricity consumption to 22%, up from around 18% in FY26, as the company accelerates its clean energy transition.

The Vedanta Group company is targeting 70% renewable electricity in its total power consumption by FY28. The move is part of its broader strategy to reduce the environmental impact of its mining and metal production operations while supporting India’s transition towards cleaner energy.

During FY26, Hindustan Zinc generated 892 million units of renewable power, compared with 632 million units in FY25. The increase was supported by a combination of renewable power generation and procurement across its operations in Rajasthan and Uttarakhand.

Renewable Power Agreement Expanded

To support its 70% renewable energy target, Hindustan Zinc has increased its round-the-clock (RTC) renewable power agreement with Serentica Renewables from 450 MW to 530 MW.

The company is combining solar, wind and energy storage solutions to ensure a more reliable supply of clean electricity for its operations. It is also working to strengthen its power transmission connectivity and improve the efficiency of its existing energy infrastructure.

Focus on Solar and Energy Efficiency

Hindustan Zinc is also exploring different renewable energy solutions, including floating solar projects on water reservoirs and ponds. Alongside renewable generation, the company is working on improving waste-heat recovery and power generation efficiency at its facilities.

The combination of renewable energy, storage and efficiency measures is expected to gradually increase the share of clean power in the company’s overall electricity mix.

Supporting a Lower-Carbon Mining Sector

The company said its clean energy strategy is aimed at producing metals with a lower environmental footprint while improving operational resilience and competitiveness.

With renewable power already accounting for 22% of its electricity consumption and a target of reaching 70% by FY28, Hindustan Zinc is positioning renewable energy as a key part of its long-term mining and metals strategy.

The company’s expansion of renewable power procurement and investments in solar, wind and storage also reflect the growing adoption of clean energy among India’s energy-intensive industrial companies.
