The Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) has dedicated its 8 MW ground-mounted Solar PV plant at Panchet, West Bengal, marking another step in the utility’s efforts to expand renewable energy generation.
The plant was formally inaugurated and dedicated on August 31, 2026, by DVC Chairman Rajesh Pandey, IAS. The facility adds solar generation to DVC’s existing power portfolio and supports the organisation’s broader shift toward cleaner sources of electricity.
The 8 MW solar project at Panchet was developed as part of DVC’s renewable-energy expansion programme. Regulatory records show that the project was planned to supply electricity to DVC consumers in West Bengal and Jharkhand, while also helping the utility meet its renewable purchase obligations.
The project was awarded through a competitive tendering process, with the scope covering the design, engineering, supply, construction, erection, testing and commissioning of the solar plant, along with a five-year operation and maintenance period.
According to DVC’s latest available government reporting, the 8 MW Panchet plant had already achieved commercial operation in March 2025. Therefore, the August 2026 event represents the formal inauguration and dedication of the facility rather than its initial commissioning.
The project forms part of DVC’s wider renewable-energy plans, which also include floating solar projects and additional ground-mounted solar capacity across its command area. DVC has been expanding its renewable portfolio to diversify its power mix and support India’s transition toward cleaner electricity generation.
Why it is important
The Panchet project demonstrates the increasing role of utility-scale solar power within India’s public-sector power companies. By adding solar generation to its portfolio, DVC can increase renewable electricity production while reducing reliance on conventional generation for meeting part of its power requirements.
