Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) has commissioned a 100 MW Group Captive Solar Power Project at Vellalankottai and Nalandhula villages in Kayathar, Tamil Nadu.
The project, known as TNGC-2, strengthens TPREL’s renewable energy portfolio and takes its total utility-scale renewable energy capacity to 12.3 GW, while its operational renewable capacity has crossed the 7 GW mark.
The solar project will supply renewable electricity to three Tata Group companies. TP Solar Limited will receive 40.625 MW, Tata Electronics Private Limited will receive 53.125 MW, and Tata Realty and Infrastructure Limited will receive 6.25 MW.
The project is expected to generate approximately 240.63 million units of electricity annually. It is also projected to help avoid around 1.5 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year, supporting the Tata Group’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.
Advanced Solar Tracking Technology
A major feature of the project is the use of Flexible Terrain Compatible (FTC) Single Axis Tracker technology. TPREL has described this as the first deployment of this technology for a Tata project in India.
The plant consists of approximately 2,61,660 Mono PERC bifacial solar modules. The tracker system is designed to adapt to varying terrain conditions while improving the amount of solar energy captured by the panels.
Power Evacuation and Supply
Electricity generated by the solar plant will be evacuated through the Kayathar 400 kV Grid Substation and supplied to the three beneficiary Tata Group companies.
The project follows a group captive renewable energy model, allowing the participating companies to source clean electricity for their operations while supporting their long-term sustainability objectives.
TPREL Expands Renewable Portfolio
Following the commissioning, TPREL’s operational renewable energy capacity has reached more than 7 GW, comprising over 5.7 GW of solar and around 1.3 GW of wind capacity.
The company also has approximately 5.3 GW of renewable energy projects under development, including 2.2 GW of solar and 3.1 GW of wind capacity. These projects are expected to be commissioned in phases over the coming months.
The commissioning of the 100 MW Tamil Nadu project adds to India’s growing utility-scale solar capacity and demonstrates the increasing adoption of captive and group captive renewable power projects by large industrial companies.
The project also contributes to India’s broader renewable-energy expansion as the country works toward its target of 500 GW of non-fossil-fuel-based power capacity by 2030
